
1967: The Biggest Year in the Modern UFO Record
A 12-month spread of 8,276 catalogued events makes 1967 the densest year in the Phenomainon corpus, outpacing both its neighbors and the 1973 Pascagoula wave.
A peak without a single flap
The Phenomainon master dataset logs 8,276 events for calendar year 1967. That is more than 1966 (4,070), 1968 (4,503), and even the heavily mythologized 1973 (6,680). It is the single largest annual total in 252,001 records.
What separates 1967 from other high-volume years is the absence of a single defining incident driving the count. The 1966 total is shaped by the Michigan "swamp gas" press cycle that spring. The 1973 total is anchored by the Pascagoula river-bank case and the Coyne helicopter encounter in October. 1967 has no equivalent center of gravity. Instead, reports are distributed across all twelve months, with the lowest month (December, 292 events) and the highest (October, 1,192) separated by a factor of four rather than the ten- or twenty-fold spikes typical of flap years.
The monthly curve does have structure. January (739) and March (941) are unusually full for winter months. A summer plateau runs from June through August (539, 793, 759). October produces the year's tallest column at 1,192 before reports collapse into the holiday weeks. But none of these months alone accounts for a quarter of the annual total, and no single state or city dominates the geography.
Geography: the UK as the second epicenter
The United States supplies 3,781 of the year's events, or roughly 46% of the catalogue. That is a familiar proportion for the corpus. The more striking number is the second-place entry: Great Britain alone logs 1,377 events, more than five times the next individual jurisdiction.
The reason is partially documentary. 1967 was the year of the "Flying Cross" sightings that swept southern England in the autumn, prompting Ministry of Defence files, regional press coverage, and follow-up investigations by organizations including BUFORA. Cases such as PCF-050281 (1967-04-28, Brixham, GBR) and PCF-052460 (1967-08-17, Harrogate, GBR) carry 8 and 9 corroborating sources respectively, reflecting both the multi-witness character of the British reports and the comparatively dense journalistic record around them.
Outside the Anglosphere, the geography is broad but thin. The corpus tags 2,318 events to a generic "EU" bucket, 676 to China, 528 to "SA" (South America regional), and 192 specifically to Argentina. Russia accounts for 191. Australia logs 185, including the well-sourced PCF-052605 (1967-08-24, Wodonga, VIC). The country-level numbers should be read with caution: the dataset uses overlapping codes ("US" vs "USA", "CA" as both Canada and California in different fields), and regional aggregates may double-count.
Within the United States, the state distribution is unusually flat. Colorado (228), California (225), Utah (219), Pennsylvania (206), Missouri (188), and Ohio (180) all sit within a 50-event band. No single state captures more than 6% of the US total. That flatness is itself a finding: 1967 was not a regional wave that went national, it was a national baseline that happened to be elevated everywhere at once.
Shape distribution: still a disc year
Of the 1967 events with a recorded shape descriptor, discs dominate. Plain "Disc" accounts for 695 reports and "DomeDisc" adds another 295, together making up roughly half of all shape-tagged cases. "Light" (136), "Cigar" (90), and "Crescent" (80) follow at distance.
The crescent figure is worth flagging. Crescent-shaped reports are rare across the corpus as a whole, and the 1967 cluster reflects a specific wave of sightings of a curved or boomerang silhouette that ran through Italy, France, and the eastern United States that spring. The shape vocabulary of 1967 is essentially the shape vocabulary of the 1950s, with discs and dome-discs still dominant. The shift toward triangles and unstructured lights that defines the late 1980s and 1990s record has not yet begun.
The high-source cases
Multi-source corroboration is a useful filter on a year this large. The corpus flags 2,019 of the 8,276 events as having two or more independent sources, or about 24%. Within that subset, a handful of cases carry deep documentation.
PCF-048986 (1967-03-08, Leominster, MA) is the most heavily sourced event of the year at 13 corroborating sources. The record describes a bluish-white glowing object hovering over a cemetery with a rocking, pendulum motion, accompanied by reported electromagnetic effects on a witness vehicle (engine, headlights, and radio failure) and reported temporary paralysis. The case sits at the intersection of the classic close-encounter template and the EM-effect literature that Hynek and others were beginning to systematize that same year.
PCF-055173 (1967-12-03, Ashland, NE) and PCF-054106 (1967-10-25, Roosevelt, UT) both carry 10 sources. The Roosevelt event describes a fast-moving orange ball tracking east toward Vernal, followed minutes later by audible jet activity at higher altitude, a pairing that recurs throughout the Uintah Basin record and helps explain Utah's anomalously high state total (219).
Two June and July cases anchor the summer plateau. PCF-050770 (1967-06-01, Richmond, VA) involves a disc-shaped, buzzing object reported as roughly Volkswagen-sized with green and red lights and a witness hospitalization, with 9 sources on file. PCF-052013 (1967-07-31, Churchville, NY) carries 9 sources for a disc report in western New York. Earlier in the year, PCF-048195 (1967-02-11, Milford, OH) and PCF-050410 (1967-05-07, Edmonton, AB) both reach 9 sources, the latter a dome-disc report that is among the more strongly documented Canadian cases of the year.
What this tells us, and what it does not
The 1967 peak is real in the data and does not collapse into a single regional flap or a single famous incident. It is broadly distributed across months, countries, and shape categories, with a US-UK backbone and meaningful contributions from Canada, Australia, Argentina, and Russia. About a quarter of the year's events carry multi-source corroboration, and the best-documented cases cluster around classic disc and dome-disc descriptors.
What the data does not tell us is why. The Phenomainon corpus aggregates reports, not underlying events, and 1967 was also a year of high media attention, active civilian investigation networks (NICAP, APRO, BUFORA), and the Condon Committee's data-gathering at the University of Colorado, which itself generated paperwork that survives in catalogues. A peak in reports is not, on its own, evidence of a peak in phenomena. It is evidence that in 1967, more sightings were made, recorded, transmitted, and preserved than in any year before or since in this dataset.
